History

Our Beginnings

In 1979, three dermatologists—Drs. Harold Brody, Arthur Gulick, and Samuel Stegman, from Georgia, Michigan, and California, respectively—recognized the need for an organization that would provide gay and lesbian dermatologists with opportunities for connection, professional networking, and mutual support. They also envisioned a network that would help patients find compassionate dermatologic care through physician referrals.

In 1980, ten physicians gathered in the hotel suite of the late Dr. Samuel Stegman during the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in New York City. That meeting helped establish the foundation for the organization. Its mission became especially important during the AIDS crisis of the mid-to-late 1980s, when referrals to compassionate dermatologists provided patients with essential care and support.

Growth & Legacy

Originally known as Dermatology Specialists, the organization operated under that name beginning in 1980. In October 2011, it was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization under the name GL Dermatology Association Foundation, Inc.

With the exception of 1987, due to a change in the timing of the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting, and 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members have gathered annually at the AAD Annual Meeting. The organization has also held smaller gatherings at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

With the support of industry partners, GALDA has grown to include hundreds of dermatologists, dermatology residents, and allies representing the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the United States and internationally.
